I wanted to share this link for South Australia's Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP), there are other greyhound programs in different states and countries as well. www.gapsa.org.au/index.htmI would definitely recommend considering adopting an ex-racing greyhound as they are truly wonderful dogs and make terrific pets. If you can't adopt, most progams greatly appreciate foster families caring for greyhounds until they can be placed in a forever home. A friend of mine is fostering her fourth grey at the moment and they'e definitely made an impression on me. I find it very unfortunate that dogs are used for sport with their futures not at all secure. Greyhounds may get negative reactions from people who thing their often being muzzled means they are aggressive- when really they are such loving dogs! GAP also has several events during the year, they're going to be at the RSPCA's Million Paws Walk (on my birthday!) for those who'd like to meet a greyhound. Here's a photo of one of my friends fostered boys, Dazzler GAP SA is now on Facebook as well

I just LOVE that face, and the little black spots on his white ear, and the big white spot on his black ear! *is melting*
It's absolutely disgraceful...Greys are born runners, and racing them could be a humane sport like lure coursing. Instead, it's mostly run by callous, cruel, and greedy people with no love for the dogs. =( Such a shame. Always happy to see an adoption story, though. I'd gladly foster or adopt at least one of them in the future if I'm able.

actually contrary to beliefs, GAP is not a rescue program, they help greyhounds straight off the track into good homes. they are normally well treated and given enough attention (at least in Australia). I recognise that there are a few trainers out there that probably do not treat as well as they should. They come to us with kennel manners, toilet training and basic manners, it's our job to teach them how to be a pet and live in a home

Oh, really? That's lovely. I didn't know much about it, of course, since I'm American. It must be different over in Australia (I would hope so!), although every sport does have its rotten apples. Here in the States, there are so many they pretty much spoil the whole bunch, and even though I'm sure there are some good, caring people involved, Grey racing has gotten a very bad image in this country--and rightly so, it seems. Of course I'm talking about the vast majority of what happens with people coming to the track to bet on the dogs like horses, not any decent racing associations-- which rock and ought to be much more common!--or folks involved. But that sounds like a wonderful organization you've got there, and a very nice system. Ours could take a lesson.

Bella's 'boyfriend' Elvis passed his green collar test last night and was adopted! The nice part is, he was adopted by my friend GreyhoundAddict, who was fostering him. I'm so chuffed! (I think Bella wanted ME to adopt him, she's very, very fond of Elvis! If only my mum was up for a second dog, I think Bella would love a Greyhound buddy to play with all day!) Elvis is such a lovely boy xx

What a man! +D I'm very pleased to hear his good news! D'awww, sighthounds can make such splendid friends with one another. :3 I can't get enough of seeing pairs or groups of them. I really, really hope that the nearby Saluki parents to whom I gave my phone number in June hit me up for a poochie playdate soon...although it seemed they were expecting their first (human) child, so I can understand why I haven't heard from them.

I can imagine they must be very busy! It would be lovely if you could organize a Saluki playdate.

They frequent the park with the recently renovated dog park, so a meet-up there or at one of our homes could be a GREAT video and photo opportunity!
