I'm not including some breeds eg. Pharoah and Ibizan hounds as there is debate as to whether or not they are sighthounds, and also some lesser known breeds as it would make for a very large poll.

I voted for the saluki, but I also have soft spots for whippets, greyhounds and Afghans

Well, somebody here already knows what my favorite breed is. But sighthounds are my favorite group of dogs...I love them all ridiculously much, including theeeeee...... Afghan Hound Borzoi Scottish Deerhound Silken Windhound Whippet (also the Longhaired) Italian Greyhound Pharaoh Hound Ibizan Hound (love the wire ones too! And I definitely consider them and the Pharaohs sighthounds; never heard from anybody who didn't.) Greyhound Tasy/Tazy/Tazi/Khalag Tazi Taigan Sloughi Bakhmull American Staghound Azawakh Lurcher (a cross between a sighthound and some other working dog; a longdog=cross between sighthounds) Cirneco dell'Etna Chart Polski Russian Steppe Borzoi Magyar agár Basenji Galgo Espanol Irish Wolfhound Rhodesian Ridgeback Portuguese Podengo Chortaj Banjara Hound Mahratta Greyhound Rampur Hound Kangaroo Dog, Australian Staghound

Show off! ;D It's very difficult to find sighthounds in Australia, many breeds just aren't around here. Even the more well known ones aren't that common. Outside of dog shows I've seen several greyhounds, one whippet, one Ibizan (very lucky to see one!), and one Afghan hound. It's a pity because they are my favourite group of dogs too.

What can I say, I'm nuts about 'em! ;D They are quite the uncommon group. Greys are certainly the most plentiful, and I have seen one or two walking around in my neighborhood, but you definitely don't see them all over the place...and of course, most people look at you funny when you say "Saluki." As though you've mixed up your dog with your motorcycle and mispronounced Suzuki. xDD It's rare to see those breeds outside of shows or coursing trials and the like---especially the Ibizan! Wow! Cool. =D The wirehaired ones look really neat too. x3 I don't think I've seen one of them in person yet. I do hope you don't have too much difficulty finding the breed you want when it comes time for you to get one, though!

Most of my sighthound exposure has been from the Royal Adelaide Show (last year I couldn't go on the day the salukis were there as I had school- it made me very sad, but I did get to see some beautifully groomed and gorgeous Afghans), my friend (greyhoundaddict)'s fostered greys and my Domestic Animal Care class at school a couple of years ago. I would've thought there would be more whippets around than there are.
It's looking like my next dog will be a little whippet. They're small enough that my mum is happy and large enough that I'm happy! My mum does like the look of salukis but they're just a little too tall for her liking.
Thankfully, whippets are pretty easy to find compared to all the other sightound breeds. For example, as far as I can tell there are no sloughi breeders in Australia which puts an end to any fantasies I may have of ever owning one!

Hunh, yeah, it somehow seems as if it'd be a good country for Whippets (and others!) =D Oh, that all sounds like so much fun! A Domestic Animal Care Class...oh boy, now I'm jealous; why can't any school around here offer one of those? Hehe. Seriously awesome. D8 Wonderful, wonderful! ^___^ Yeah, Whippets are the perfect medium-sized compromise. <3 Glad that they should be available to you, even if it takes some waiting. Aw, shucks! That's a rare one, all right. (Of course, there are those who argue that there really is no difference between a Sloughi and a smooth Saluki, but I guess until someone proves that they're the same breed, I will continue to love them separately but similarly. Sloughis look amazing in brindle...) It would probably be possible to import one from elsewhere, but of course it would be far preferable to be able to locate one within one's own country. Especially a country/continent that's also an island! I had an Australian friend with Salukis (she had to fly them there with her when they were pups), and once wanted to find a way to take one of the puppies she was adopting out, a little before I found Ulla...but based on her recommendations I wound up finding the local peoples and available pups. ^^

I think the climate here would be quite good for thin coated breeds like whippies as it doesn't really get that cold. Sunburn could be a potential problem though!
Obviously I'd rather not have to import a dog from overseas, quarantine's very strict over here and it'd be very stressful for the dog I'd imagine. Luckily there are several saluki breeders in Australia so when the time comes I should be able to find one, though most likely with a bit of a wait.

Oh yes, that would be quite good...as for sunburn, I would guess that for extended periods in extremely bright sunlight, a protectant product or a thin doggie garment would do the trick. ^^
Right...I've never actually had a dog shipped from anywhere, and if at all possible I would rather go and pick him/her up myself regardless of the location. Ah, that's good; I actually take it as a positive sign when there's a wait. It often (though not always) indicates that the breeder's responsible and doesn't overproduce puppies, and also that the breed itself isn't in danger of being overbred (which Salukis most definitely aren't, fortunately!)

We have a great website in Australia with breeders and puppies listed, I think it's going to be VERY helpful for finding a whippet puppy in a few months time. I mostly just enjoy oohing and aahing over different puppies. www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/list.aspIs there a similar resource in the US?

Ooooooooh, aaaaaahhh! *O* I want so many different breeds, honestly. +} That's pretty great. I'm sure we have similar sites, though probably not as good or official. The nearest thing I'd go to would be this: www.akc.org/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfmThe American Kennel Club maintains the listings of each breed's parent club and rescue organization, local clubs within each state, and quality breeders. Of course, there is always Petfinder.com for locating adoptable animals, especially if breed is less of a factor in someone's choice.
